List of Free and Open Music
Finding free or royalty-free music can be a pain, so I've put together this list composed primarily of free and open source music archives.
A distinction should be noted between free and open music. Free music is freely attainable with the permission of the artist. Royalty-free music may have a price, but is available for use in podcasts, videos, and so on. Open music, typically under a Creative Commons license, generally redistributable and modifiable. This is to say, open music has the fewest restrictions and is royalty-free.
- Jamendo - Large archive with artists from all around the world. Most open music.
- Podsafe Music Network - This archive can help point you to artists' websites. (If you're willing to go through the HTML source code, you can download the open music directly from their website.) Typically open music.
- Creative Commons Audio - Creative Commons has their own list of open music that will direct you to various artists.
- ccMixter - Mostly open music.
- Steal My Music: Snatch & Run - Mostly free music.
- Swedelife - An mp3 blog. Mostly free music.
- Podsafe Audio
However you use artists' music, give them credit.
If you still can't find anything, try Music Bakery or Magnatune, which charges you once for the music, but it's royalty-free.
